Abstract

This study explores the perceptions and attitudes of university students in Bangladesh toward choosing teaching as a lifelong profession. In a rapidly changing job market, the social and economic status of teaching often influences the career decisions of the youth. Khandakar Imdadul Haque Sohan examines various factors, including social prestige, salary structures, job security, and personal passion, that shape the mindset of higher education students. The research identifies a dichotomy where teaching is highly respected as a noble vocation yet frequently viewed as a secondary career choice due to perceived financial limitations compared to corporate or civil service sectors. Utilizing a structured survey and statistical analysis, the paper highlights how gender, academic background, and familial influence play significant roles in determining a student's inclination toward the education sector. Published in the journal of the Centre for Advanced Research in Social Science (CARSS), University of Dhaka, this work underscores the need for policy-level reforms to improve the attractiveness of the teaching profession. The findings suggest that elevating the professional environment and providing competitive incentives are essential to attract the best minds of the country into the classroom, ensuring the long-term quality of the national education system.
