The Role of Government and Non-Government Organizations for Ensuring Health Care Facilities of Elderly Widow in Bangladesh
Abstract Summary
In Bangladesh, an improved quality of life has led to a rapid increase in the population over 60 years of age, presenting an emerging challenge as elderly widows develop specialized needs and require unique caregiving services. Since the nation lacks a comprehensive social welfare system, there is intense competition for inadequate resources, particularly within health and medical sectors. The study envisages a significant demographic shift from a traditional pyramid structure to one with a higher proportion of elderly individuals. The growing trend toward nuclear families and the migration of children abroad have left many elderly widows without essential financial and social support. Health and nutritional status in this demographic depend heavily on access to adequate food, safe water, sanitation, and hygiene standards. Monija Islam argues for the implementation of WHO-recommended "Age-Friendly Primary Health Care" centers and the establishment of dedicated hospital units for the elderly. The research emphasizes that ensuring the welfare of elderly widows is not only a policy requirement but an ethical duty. It calls for coordinated efforts between government and non-government organizations to develop sustainable healthcare facilities and social safety nets for this vulnerable segment of society.
