Abstract
[Image illustrating the social vulnerability and dependency levels of elderly widows regarding financial resources, healthcare access, and family decision-making power]This paper scrutinizes the economic, social, and emotional support systems of aged widows over sixty years living in the People's Republic of Bangladesh. It aims to locate the socio-economic conditions, resources, and systemic impacts affecting this vulnerable demographic. In Bangladesh, there is a distinct scarcity of a comprehensive formal arrangement for aged widows, who usually rely on informal support from sons, daughters, neighbors, and society members. Findings indicate that a significant majority of aged widows lack regular financial support, as government aid in the form of widow and aged allowances remains insufficient. The study highlights a critical social dynamic: while aged widows often coexist within the family unit, they are frequently excluded from family decision-making processes. Furthermore, in most cases, they do not receive adequate respect or necessary medical facilities, leading to an inflated risk for those solely dependent on family support. This research reports on a field survey involving one hundred aged widows, analyzed using quantitative tools, and emphasizes the urgent need for enhanced social safety nets and healthcare policies to protect the dignity and well-being of the elderly widow population.
