Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the rates of smartphone addiction (SA) among young adult users in Bangladesh and to assess it thereof, in relation to its consequent effects on their library use and reading behaviors. With a cross-sectional research design, the study will address this group of people through surveys comprising of validated SA scales with modified questionnaires designed to capture subtle data of reading habits and library experiences. The expected results are that the prevalence of SA among the Bangladeshi youth will be high, which will be negatively related to the reading level, academic success, and physical visits to libraries. The extensive digital immersion will also raise a noticeable change to digital consumption of information which would present a major challenge to the traditional library services. The report ends by noting that such findings are of paramount importance, and suggests a multi-faceted intervention strategy, which should be a cooperation between youth, parents, educators, libraries, and policymakers in order to foster healthier digital behaviour, as well as in order to revitalize traditional literacy behaviours.
