University of Southern Queensland’s Emeritus Professor Dr Shahjahan Khan has received the highly prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the Indian Association of Reliability and Statistics (IARS) during its 9th International Conference held in Rohtak, near Delhi, India from 28–30 November 2025.
This outstanding international award recognises his lifelong academic excellence, groundbreaking research, international reputation, professional leadership, and scholarly community services of Emeritus Professor Khan that has created indelible influence with lasting positive impact on academia, society, profession, and global community.
Emeritus Professor Khan presented a keynote address at the International Conference on “Global Advances in Statistical Modelling, Optimization Techniques, and Data Science (IC-GASMOTDS-2025)” as a part of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, Haryana, India.
The title of his talk was “Decision from Data – Use and Abuse of Statistics in Research, Development, and Public Decisions.”
The Lifetime Achievement Award represents the highest honour granted by IARS, acknowledging individuals who have significantly shaped statistical science through academic research, innovative methodologies, academic leadership, and global outreach. Professor Khan’s remarkable contribution over several decades has earned him widespread acclaim and recognition from statistical communities across continents.
On Friday 28 November 2025, in the presence of distinguished guests including the Honourable Education Minister of Haryana of India, Shri Manohar Lal, and the Vice Chancellor of Maharshi Dayanand University, the award was presented to Professor Khan (second from the left).
In accepting the award, Professor Khan expressed his gratitude to IARS and MDU, noting that the recognition reflects the contributions of his cohorts of colleagues, students, and institutions he has served throughout his career.
He emphasised the growing importance of rigorous statistical techniques in modern scientific research, data-driven decision making, and optimisation approaches.
This landmark event attracted eminent statisticians, data scientists, and academic leaders from around the world, highlighting contemporary advancements in statistical modelling, optimisation, and data science.
He also received the prestigious International Statistical Education Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) Gold Medal in 2001 (Pakistan) for contribution to the development of statistics; Islamic Countries Society of Statistical Sciences (ISOSS) Gold Medal in 2007 (Malaysia) for contributions to biostatistics; Dr. Mohammad Hussain Gold Medal of the Pakistan Statistical Association in 2019 for excellence in professional leadership.
He is a distinguished Fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS) and the Australian Society for Biometry (ASB), and he is a life member of the Indian Association for Physics and Statistics (IAPS).
He has supervised over 20 PhD students, published over 200 journal articles, produced 28 research working papers, and delivered more than 250 invited talks in international professional meetings.
He started his academic career as a Lecturer at Dhaka University in 1980 and has held various positions at Western University, Ontario; King Fahd University, Saudi Arabia; University of Malaysia, Sabah; Bahrain University; and Sultan Qaboos University in Oman.
Professor Khan is widely viewed as a significant contributor to the modern development of statistics and biostatistics. He is an active leader within the international community of statisticians.
He is the founder and Coordinator of the Bangladesh Collaborative of Asian University of Southern Queensland, Australia.
Professor Khan is also very well-known for his community service involvement and has significantly contributed to innovation of modern statistical education.
